Skylight includes two map layers that can be toggled on/off - the 12 Nautical Miles Territorial Seas and EEZs. The map layers act as guides to assist with analysis of events.

The source of the EEZ layer is: https://www.seaaroundus.org/data/#/eez and the 12 Nautical Miles map layer is marineregion.org.

Because of the complexity of the map layer files, Skylight performs some light processing to get the files into the correct format for loading, and simplifies the shapes of the files so the layer loads quickly in Skylight. Without the simplification there would be lag in the map loading, especially for areas with low internet bandwidth.

The results of this shape simplification are most obvious nearshore where you’ll see the area does not following the coastline:

There may be other areas where the simplification process changes the EEZ in Skylight.

For a more precise EEZ or 12 NM Territorial Water area, we recommend creating an AOI [external link to YouTube] in Skylight that matches your country’s EEZ or territorial waters.
