To help with the analysis of events, Skylight includes two map layers that can be toggled on/off - the 12 Nautical Miles Territorial Seas and EEZs.

The source of the EEZ layer is: https://www.seaaroundus.org/data/#/eez and the 12 Nautical Miles map layer is marineregion.org.

Because of the complexity of the map layer files, Skylight performs some light processing to get the files into the correct format for loading, and simplifies the shapes of the files so the layer loads quickly in Skylight. Without the simplification there would be lag in the map loading, especially for areas with low internet bandwidth.

The results of this simplification are most obvious nearshore where you’ll see the area does not following the coastline:

There may be other areas where the simplification process changes the EEZ in Skylight.

For the best results, we recommend creating an AOI in Skylight that matches your country’s EEZ.
